Updated: Mar 17

On any given day, we receive around two to three inquiries on how to dispose of a car on Kauai. Whether you use our services or not, we want you to have the knowledge you need to dispose of your vehicle properly. So we've provided some information below that may be helpful to you as you navigate through this process.

To start, we recommend you visit the County of Kauai website for detailed instructions on how to dispose of your vehicle. If you need further explanation, we've provided some easy-to-follow steps below to help make your vehicle disposal experience hassle-free.

There are two options for disposing of your vehicle.

Option A

  1. Download the Waiver, Release, and Indemnity Agreement form available on the county website.

  2. Fill out the form but DON'T SIGN IT YET. You will need to sign it in-person at the recycling center.

  3. You'll need to take three photos of your vehicle: 1) A photo of the vehicle from the left or right side, 2) A photo of your vehicle from the front or rear, and 3) A photo of the VIN number. Print these three photos on plain, 8.5' by 11' paper.

  4. Bring your form, the three photo printouts and a valid driver's license or Hawaii State ID to the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility. You will sign the form there. DO NOT LOSE THIS FORM as you will need to give it to the tow truck driver.

  5. Once you have your completed form, contact a tow provider to tow your vehicle to the recycling center. Be sure to give the driver your completed Waiver, Release, and Indemnity Agreement form as they will need it to dispose of your vehicle.

Option B

  1. Remove the license plates from the vehicle you intend to dispose of and bring them to the DMV.

  2. At the DMV, fill out a Junking Affidavit form. This form is also available on the county website.

  3. Have the affidavit signed and stamped at the DMV. DO NOT LOSE THIS FORM as you will need to give it to the tow truck driver.

  4. Once the affidavit has been signed and stamped, contact a tow provider to tow your vehicle to the recycling center. Be sure to give the driver your completed Junking Affidavit form as they will need it to dispose of your vehicle.

The price of disposal as well as towing costs are dependent on a number of factors. In regards to disposal, refer to the county website for details. In regards to towing costs, contact your tow provider.

3 things to remember

  • Be sure not to leave trash, loose car parts or tires in the vehicle. Anything not bolted to the vehicle must be disposed of separately.

  • Before the tow provider arrives to take your vehicle to the recycling center, be sure to check the vehicle for any valuables. Once it's delivered to the recycling center, you will not be able to recover any items from the vehicle.

  • If you are a commercial business, the rules for disposing vehicles are slightly different. Contact us and we'll help you get started.
